The Cappies is a student-centered theatre criticism program which promotes community collaboration, critical analysis skills, and theatre appreciation. Each participating high school forms a team of Cappies critics, and these students are tasked with attending other high school productions in the region and writing theatical reviews of these shows.

Each participating high school designates a maximum of two school shows as Cappies shows. These shows will be attended and reviewed by the Cappies teams from other schools. The Cappies critic teams are trained in theatre criticism, the Cappies rules, and fairness and respect for their fellow students and high school theatre programs.

At the conclusion of the school year, each member of the Cappies team will have the opportunity to participating in Voting Day, scoring every element, performance and technical, from the productions they reviewed throughout the year, resulting in nominations and award winners. The end-of-year Cappies Gala showcases the year’s productions, awarding students from across the region for their theatrical work.
